Experience description:

My son passed away 11/28/05. He left his beloved cats in my care. Smokey was a Siamese mix about 10 years old. I kept Smokey as long as I could until the day I knew he felt pain. I took him to the vet and sat in the car with him before we went in. I prayed over him and told him he was going to be with Darryl and he gave a little meow when I said Amen. He died at about 11;30 on 3/13/07. I had come to love him so much but I knew he would be in heaven with Darryl so in that way I was happy.

Smokey had a ritual he went through every night. As soon as I lay down, he would jump on the bed and walk over my legs from one side to the other, several times until he was satisfied that he had found the best place to lay down. With his cancer, he had lost all weight, from 13 lbs to 3. As he walked over my legs he was as light as a feather. There were no other cats in the house.

When I laid down that first night without him , it was hard. As I lay there I did not feel him jump on the bed but I felt him walk on my legs back and forth just as when he was alive. After a few times I raised up on my elbow hoping to see him in the body but there was nothing there and the steps stopped. I did not feel him jump on the bed, I believe my precious son carried him to the bed and I take comfort in knowing they are together.

I was wide awake. The experience was so familiar to me and I felt such delight. It was as real as ever.

Was the experience dream like in any way?

No

Describe in detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:

happiness because I knew it was only his body that died and he was alive with Darryl. I think Darryl brought him to the bed so Smokey could give me "goodbye" for now.

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience?

Yes

I was still in heavy grief over Darryl's death. Even though he has given me so many gifts in the form of pictures, the smell of tobacco and a picture in my computer that I never put there. The last contact was 12/10/07, the second anniversary of his memorial, he clearly said "mom". it was wonderful to hear his voice if only that one word. The visit from Smokey was healing too.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?

All contact has been wonderful
