Experience description:

When my husband passed, he was in the hospital very ill. He had been there a week and 1 day, and I had been up for two days straight, my mom came to stay there with me to help while I got some sleep in a bed next to him.

When I woke up in the morning, I went to check on him and his body was cold, he wasn't breathing, and had no pulse. The medical personnel came in a pronounced him. I was so upset that I was asleep, I was in the bathroom talking about with my mom. We went back out into the room and I looked at him, and he was breathing! Mom and I both went over to him, and touched him and his body was warm. Called medical staff and they couldn't believe it. They said nothing like that had ever happened before. No one dies, is pronounced and comes back. I took his hand, told him I loved him, told him I would miss him, but if he was ready to go, I'd be alright. He nodded his head. He left then, and was gone that time. I firmly believe he came back so I could say good bye. I was listening to one of those medical shows and they were saying that a body has to be dead for at least an hour to be cold. Yet, my husband came back from that for me. It took my mom weeks before she could even talk about it. She was just so shocked.

Was this experience difficult to express in words?  Yes

Just so unbelievable, stunned!!

Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased?      Yes

What smell, scent, fragrance or odor did you smell?           Two weeks after his passing I smelled cigarette smoke in the corner of living room I was in.  Now he never smoked in there and no one had been in the house that smoked.  Both my dogs came over to the area and started sniffing the air. That is how I knew I wasn't imagining it.

Was the smell, scent, fragrance or odor familiar?     Cigarette smoke.  My husband was a smoker but never in the living room.

Was anything communicated by the smell?   Just that it was my hubby popping in.

Is there any possibility that the smell, scent, fragrance or odor was from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your experience?        No

How long did the experience last?        Just a few minutes.

Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?         More like  it was there long enough for me to smell and both dogs to smell it, then it was gone.

Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased?           Yes

How do you currently view the reality of your experience?           Experience was definitely real

Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not real:           Because all the medical staff and my mom witnessed it.  The smoking one, my dogs both smelled it.  Dogs can't lie.

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience?           Uncertain
