Experience description:

My mom recently passed away on Oct 1, 2012. She lived with me the last few years of her life and we were close. She had a long hard battle at the end with cancer and suffered greatly the last 6 weeks of her life in the hospital. At the very end I knew her time was near, I was at the hospital and I told her to go with God, it was ok and that I loved her. I left the hospital that night to go home and get some sleep, passed out on the couch about 10:30 PM and had a dream (which is something that I never do or at least never remember). I had a dream of a horrible storm, very dark sky, and in the very distant horizon I saw a tornado and became concerned about where my mom was and if she was safe. The very next instant in my dream I was somewhere else (it was not home where we lived) but a very open place with nothing around us, and I saw my mom walk above (like on a walkway the best I could describe) and I could see all of her just clearly walking above me and with her was my most beloved dog who passed away 3 years ago and was following right behind her. I remember yelling up at her to hurry up to come down to where I was, and then I was instantly awoken from the dream by the phone ringing and just knew what that phone call was. Sure enough, it was the hospital informing me that she had just passed away, it was 1:10 AM. I do believe my mom was letting me know she just made it to heaven, even before the hospital got the chance to tell me.

Was this experience difficult to express in words?  No

Did you ONLY sense an awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling them?            No

Did you hear the deceased or hear something associated with the deceased?          No

Did you feel a touch or experience any physical contact from the deceased?            No

Did you see the deceased?         Yes

my mom appeared as a healthy 80 year old as I remembered her before illness, not the same as I saw her in the hospital, a body withering away

How clearly did the deceased appear?            she was solid and she seemed like she was really there in my dream

How much of the deceased did you see?       all of her

Did the deceased appear or not appear to be the age at which they died?       she did appear to me as she did prior to going into the hospital

How healthy did the deceased appear to be?            she appeared to be a healthy 80 year old, she did not look at all like she did in her last days at the hospital, which was tormented and withering away.

Is there any possibility what you saw was from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your experience?           no

Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased?      No

How long did the experience last?        it was a short dream, not sure actually how long the dream lasted.

Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?         I don't remember anything prior to the dream - the dream was ended when the phone rang, it was the hospital calling me to inform me she just passed away.

Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased?           No

Did the deceased give you information you did not previously know?  no

How do you currently view the reality of your experience?           Experience was definitely real

Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not real:           The dream was real. The funny thing is if I still dream, I never remember them, ever.  So for me to even have a dream about her that I recall vividly, the fact she was above me and with one of my dogs that I was closest to than any other who passed away 3 yrs prior, I have to believe she was telling me that she made it to heaven.

Was the experience dream like in any way?   Yes

It was a dream, I was awoken instantly by the phone ringing and had absolute recall of everything I just dreamed.

Describe in detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:           In the dream I saw a storm, the sky was dark, saw a tornado and I instantly felt concern for my mother.  In the end of the dream when I saw her walking above me, I felt urgency in calling to her to hurry up and come down to where I was

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience?           Yes

I know my mom, I felt like she did tell me she was ok and she was in heaven, which made me feel peace, something I had not felt for the last 3 months going through her illness.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?      there was none really, but I guess if I had to answer, I was yelling at my mom to hurry up and come down to me, I wish the dream could of gone on, but I was awoken by the phone call.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience?         Uncertain                  Describe:            This just happened less than 5 days ago, it is soon to tell about how this may affect the future; however, I can say that I am even closer to GOD now, I am truly  gratified that my mom was able to come to me somehow and tell me she is ok and that she made it.

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
   No

Did the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death, afterlife, God, etc.?  Yes     I was always a believer in God and an afterlife, and this experience just reflects to me what I have always somehow known.

Death Compacts are when two or more living people promise among themselves that whoever dies first will try to contact the other(s).  Have you ever made such a compact?        Uncertain

My mother while in the hospital did not say she would try and contact me, but, since it was me and her the last years and we did not have much money, she told me that (when she passed on) she would help me if she could, for which I thought was such a loving thing to say she was still going to try and take care of me!

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?          No

What emotions did you feel during the experience?            The dream occurred then I was awoken by the phone ringing, I went numb when the doctor told me she just passed away, they asked me questions I had to answer and that was it.  I sat on the couch for about an hour after the phone call a little freaked out as the dream was so vivid and trying to get a grip on it all.

One of my dogs, a black & white pit-bull named Spuddy, who passed away in 2009.  This dog and me were very close or "bonded" so to say, I rescued him from a sorrow-filled life (actually I feel that he picked me as he busted out of his yard and came to me as I used to feed him) and I think he was forever grateful, he was the best dog I ever had and we were close.

Did you see a light?           No

Did any part of your experience seem to occur in a place other than the location described above?            Uncertain

In the dream I cannot tell you I was dreaming that we were in our home, I'm not sure in the dream where we were, there was really nothing around in the dream, it was just all sort of white, my mom seemed to be on what I would call a walkway above and I could see her so very clearly, just like she was on a floor above me.

Have you shared this experience with others?

Yes     most find it inspiring and surprising to hear that I was dreaming of her right when she passed on.

Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher or web site?            Yes

there were a couple of other sites I posted on, mainly because I was interested to see how many people told of an experience of dreaming of someone when right when they passed on.

Is there anything else you would like to add regarding your experience?       no.

Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?            No

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?         No

Did you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or other spiritual event?           Yes

I can tell you that my father passed away when I was 21, and it was the 1st time I experienced such a painful loss, I was close to my dad at that time and I still remember thinking I just needed to know if he was ok.  My dad passed away in January, the winter was below zero and we had LOTS of snow.  One day about two days after he passed on, I was looking out the window and the sun just came out in a very glorious light, I could feel the sun warming me and it created such a beautiful scene outside on all that snow, and I closed my eyes for a moment, and in that moment I felt a great peace, I really felt like something was telling me he was just fine.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?               Yes

Please offer any suggestions you may have to improve this questionnaire.    no, not to my knowledge.
