Experience description:

My mystical experience occurred when I was 13. My grandmother (who had a prominent part in raising me) visited me in my sleep to say goodbye. I was on a summer high school vacation in Lac Léman, France. She seemed to be ‘shielding’ me from toes to head, telepathically conveying that there is no reason to be sad or upset, as what was happening to her is a normal transition - the simplest natural thing. She showed me the light calmly waiting for her, when she’s ready. I asked ‘when we are going to be together again?’ She responded ‘oh, many many years from now.’ I woke up, looked at the time hoping the dream wasn’t true. I noticed that the three schoolmates with whom I was sharing the room were sleeping in exactly the same positions when I ‘saw’ them as my grandma appeared across my bed between a series of half open windows. Also, the morning light was coming into the room with the same angle, hue and intensity as in the dream. My grandma approached me in intermittent motion as if she was moving faster than my mind could grasp (which, perhaps, indicates she had indeed passed into a different realm). Her communication was telepathically instant while my question, coming from myself, was in my normal, slower speed. Later that day, I received a phone-call from home (Athens, Greece) informing of my grandmother’s sudden passing earlier in the morning – exactly during the time of my dream. Not sure if this is a 'shared' death experience, but I feel it like a metaphysical gift as since then I *know* that conscience is alive and can travel after physical death. This happened in July 1976. I would love to know if there are other people who had a similar experience and under what name or term this is categorized.

At the time of your experience was there an associated life-threatening event?   No

Was the experience difficult to express in words?  No

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?    All the time.

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness?      Normal consciousness and alertness   My highest level of consciousness was normal - the same with normal night dreaming during sleep.

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.   Same.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.   Same.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during a time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body?   No

What emotions did you feel during the experience?   Surprise. Apprehension for what was happening to me. Worry regarding my grandmother's passing but also a calmness as if an emotional kinda 'silencer' had tranquilized me, protecting me from grief and devastation.

Did you pass into or through a tunnel?   Yes   I remember seeing a white light waiting for my grandma as if at the end of a tunnel This image was static - I suddenly found myself there - I did not 'slide', 'moved' or 'passed' into the tunnel. I just found myself there as in a void and the light was calmly waiting.

Did you see an unearthly light?   Yes   Yes, I saw a white light peacefully radiating at the end of this void or tunnel. It was clear that the light was 'neutral' towards me and was focused on my grandma calmly waiting for her to complete her communication with me (to say goodbye and tranquilize or cancel my grief). I felt that the light was full of wisdom, understanding, aware of everything and had consented to my grandma's wish.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice?   No

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)?   No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings?   No

Did you become aware of past events in your life during your experience?   No

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world?   No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down?   Time seemed to go faster or slower than usual
Feeling my grandma's communication time was speeded up. Feeling my communication, time was normal.

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything?   No

Did you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?   Yes
Yes, in the sense that my grandma showed me the light calmly waiting for her.

Did you come to a border or point of no return?   No

Did scenes from the future come to you?  No

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness suggesting that there either is (or is not) continued existence after earthly life (“life after death”)?   Yes   Absolutely. It was obvious that this was my grandma's point: that there is no reason for me to be devastated by her passing, as what was happening to her is a normal transition - the simplest natural thing. And that we will unite again when my time comes.

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness that God or a supreme being either does (or does not) exist?   Yes   The calm white radiant light seemed to have the compassionate and wise qualities we call God.

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness that you either did (or did not) exist prior to this lifetime?   No

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness that a mystical universal connection or unity/oneness either does (or does not) exist?   Uncertain   When I asked my grandma ‘when we are going to be together again?’ and she telepathically responded ‘oh, many many years from now' I sensed (or I imagined) a visual of how this moment would be. My grandma as a little sun coming towards me that by that time I would be another little sun. Then, we merge. And so, she takes me within her into that massive white light of collective knowledge and energy.

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness regarding earthly life’s meaning or purpose?   No

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness regarding earthly life’s difficulties, challenges, or hardships?   No

During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness regarding love?   Yes   I felt my grandma's love towards me and that the white light 'knew' everything.

During your experience, did you encounter any other specific information / awareness that you have not shared in other questions that is relevant to living our earthly lives?   No

Did you have a sense of knowing special knowledge or purpose?   Yes   I was aware during the experience that this was happening to me for the first time and was probably unique, thus my apprehension. I was aware that my grandmother - when she was alive - had shared with me that she knew I have a special purpose (which is something that I keep doubting).

What occurred during your experience included:   Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience   I was too young (13 years old). I had not shaped / crystallized beliefs even though my family background was decently religious. On the other hand since I remember myself I always felt awkwardly 'connected' with a force for the Good. Extremely strange.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience?   I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of th   I remember my experience deeply accurately, shot by shot, I could make it a short film if I had the means and the time.

Discuss any changes that might have occurred in your life after your experience:   The changes I describe below occurred very gradually as at the time of the experience I was 13 years old.

My experience directly resulted in:   Large changes in my life

Did you have any changes in your values or beliefs after the experience that occurred as a result of the experience?
Yes   I have grown to become a spiritual person, more compassionate, less material – although I still have ‘work’ to do on all these.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience?   Yes   I remember having a vision from my very early life - 1 year old or less - without ever understanding its meaning. After the experience, I seem to have developed a 'connection' with what I call the Divine or Force for the Good. Although I am not a follower of any organized religion, when I pray to God I get a response and I am grateful beyond words. Also, even though I am not a professional songwriter, I have developed an instant composer's gift (musical). Once I know a situation, characters, plot, etc. I can compose the song. Twice in my life, under times of extreme stress, I had dreams/visions where I heard music and seen enlightened beings. I was able to reproduce the music.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you?
This experience, through time, has ignited my humanity and creativity. I am not perfect but I try to be a decent person.

Have you ever shared this experience with others?
Yes  With my inner circle of relatives back in 1976 and with a few very close friends after that. They just listened. No evident judgement, influence or response.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience?   No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened:   Experience was definitely real   With surprise and apprehension. After receiving a phone call confirming my grandmother's passing (on the same day as my experience), i did end up alone in a narrow toilet in the French College that was hosting us, crying my heart out. Yes, the solace of the experience was there for me to grasp (and I did that), but at the same time the pain of my grandmother's loss was overwhelming. She was like a mother to me.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience at the current time:   Experience was definitely real   I know the experience was real right after the phone call from home (Athens, Greece) informing me of my grandmother's passing - exactly at the time of my vivid dream / vision.

Have your relationships changed specifically as a result of your experience?   Yes   Relationships with material people or users have broken. As I was growing older, my narrative vision has gradually acquired a 'metaphysical' point of view (close to magic realism). My film projects currently in development are plots about compassion, courage and humanistic issues. One project is a musical about Solace on the theme of a different realm. Another project is about balance (restoring the balance) against what I call the evil spirit of high excess. Thus, my experience was my original impulse for all of these.

Have your religious beliefs/spiritual practices changed specifically as a result of your experience?   Yes   By growing older I stopped being a blind follower of the Greek-Orthodox denomination. I do believe in God, it's his 'club' that I have problems with. I mean those of the clergy that use their position for power and control. I do love the teachings of Jesus (love your fellow man) and I find they align with the higher truth and the golden rule that is found in the core of all the great religions. The rest, Paul's epistles, the hymns, etc., I think, it is man-made literature. in my opinion, if one needs to find God the way passes through the fellow man.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience?   No

Is there anything else that you would like to add about your experience?   Not sure if I understand completely the term 'reproduced' within this context but I can share that other visions / connections I had always make me think of this fundamental experience. It feels as if a divine secret has been shared with me. At this point, allow me to mention that I never found refuge in psychic or parapsychology groups, classes, etc. One time (1982) the father of a friend who was practicing parapsychology and astrology asked me to meditate with him and put his hands on my forehead as if going to trance. Suddenly, he stopped and said that my 'third eye' was open. He wandered what metaphysical experience I had. I said 'nothing' as I didn't feel I could trust the man. However, my mind went back to the experience I have been narrating to you here.

Did the questions asked and information that you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?   Yes   All the questions were aiming to accuracy and to form a complete image. The questionnaire was well structured and way beyond me.

What could a national organization with an interest in near death experience (NDE) do that would be of interest to you?      There may be conferences and actions that you do without me knowing, thus I am a little reserved in proposing. As a visual storyteller, I would love to see films, documentaries and quality TV series embracing diverse NDE experiences.

Are there any other questions that we could ask to help you communicate your experience?                        As my experience was not a clear personal NDE but a vision/dream or a 'shared' NDE of my grandmother's passing, I would suggest that you could provide a section for similar accounts. Having said that, you may already have taken care of this - it's just me that I haven't realized. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my experience. My apologies if I expanded with unnecessary information.
