Experience description:

Well, two interesting things happened.

1)  My grandmother died in 2001 in Los Angeles.  My aunt told me that immediately after the funeral, everyone returned to her home for a gathering.  During the gathering my grandmother's music box began playing.  It was up on a shelf and no one was touching it.  My aunt was certain the box was broken (it was very old) so after it played she took it off the shelf in shock, to look at it.  Indeed it was broken and the music box did not even have all the parts inside to make it play.  It was mostly just the decorative outer box.  Anyway I had heard this story as kind of a family legend, and always thought it was interesting even though I didn't recall ever seeing that music box.  Last week I was in Los Angeles and I went to my aunt's house for the first time in roughly five years.  I was walking through her home videotaping so that I could show my husband what my aunt's house looks like.  I felt a kind of spirit energy as if I was being watched or as if there was a great warmth and presence in the room.  It was a pleasurable feeling. I totally forgot about the music box as I was filming, but I eventually found my camera looking at it randomly, and I realized, "hey that must be the infamous music box".  I did not touch or disturb it at all.  I simply felt warm and pleased to see it.  As I was walking away and filming another room the music box began playing, but slowly and softly as if it was running out of wind-up power.  It played about ten notes which are audible on my videotape.  My aunt turned to me with her eyes wide, hearing the music from across the house and not remembering that I knew the story from 2001.  She told me again the story of 2001 and I said "I  know, and I heard it too".  We were both speechless.  We checked the music box and again it did not work when we tried to wind it.  Most of the parts were missing.  My aunt feels that it was my grandmother saying hello since I had not been to California since her passing.   I myself had the distinct feeling that it was my father, who had died at Christmas just seven months ago.  I felt his warmth while filming, and felt his presence.  But I guess we will never know.

2)  Regarding my father:

My father had spent a lot of time in Los Angeles at my aunt's home (the home mentioned above).  My aunt is my mother's sister but mom and dad loved to spend time there.  My dad was a handyman and he put in outside moonlights in my aunt's garden about two years ago.  They are the kind that go on automatically when it gets dark out.  Well at Christmastime 2005 my father was dying of cancer in Canada.  My aunt in L.A. was apparently sitting in her garden one night and it was dark, so the little moonlights were on.  They suddenly went out.  My aunt thought instinctively "oh my god, I sense that means that Don has died".  This was apparently at 9:15 pm L.A. time.  My father did die at that moment which was 12:15 am  Canada time.    The lights remained out for months even though my aunt had technicians and both of her sons in law come to repair them.  No one could find a reason why they didn't work.  She left them in the garden even though they didn't work, because they reminded her of my dad and she couldn't bear to rip them out.   One night about two months after he died, my aunt was apparently in her yard feeling very blue.  She said to the sky "Come on Don, if you were trying to give me a sign by turning the lights off, I got it.  But I need the lights to come on again.  I don't feel safe with my yard all dark at night".   Instantly the lights went back on and they have worked fine ever since.

I feel that my dad is somehow tied to that house, and that is why I think he made the music box go, although my aunt feels it was my grandmother who made the music since she owned the music box.  We will never know.
