Experience description:

This was one of about 8 ADCs - approximately 2 months after my son died, I was just checking my email when I noticed one from a name I didn't recognize from a company I used to work for. It said 'Dave Smith (not real name) of [Company I used to work for] has accepted your invitation to Linked In. I thought 'what the heck' - as I hadn't checked my Linked In account since I retired about 5 years ago - and even when I was still working I hardly got on it and never invited anyone to join my group. Out of curiosity, I went to Linked In and retrieved my password, then clicked on 'contacts'. What came up was a whole column of shadowed heads. But right about in the middle, a picture of my son pops up - one I hadn't seen before - he was looking at me with sort of a 'twinkle' in his eye - across from his picture was the word 'message'. None of the other contacts had message next to them. So I clicked on it. There was no message, but it said 'Sent from Mobile - one wk ago'. btw, I couldn't find the name of the supposed person I had 'invited' to join me on Linked In. I ran downstairs to show my husband (wish I'd taken a screenshot) and he couldn't explain it. (At least I have a witness).I said 'we have Kyle's mobile phone, don't we?' He said 'Yes, but I haven't done anything with it, it's just been sitting here.' Even if my husband had done something with it, he wouidn't have known how to use a fake name from my old company, etc. - he never used Linked In. And he wouldn't have tricked me like this. So - I messaged my son back: 'Hey, have we connected?'

The next day, I checked it. My message to my son was there, but all the rest of the info had totally disappeared. To this day, I don't know what that was or how there could be any logical explanation.

Was this experience difficult to express in words?     No

Did you ONLY sense an awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling them?      Uncertain

Did you hear the deceased or hear something associated with the deceased?          No

Did you feel a touch or experience any physical contact from the deceased?         No

Did you see the deceased?       No

Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased? No

How long did the experience last?      Just that night. The next day his message was gone.

Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?       Sudden

Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased?          Yes

Playful, as I said, I swear in his photo he had a 'twinkle in his eye'. I'd never seen that photo of him before that I can recall. I just felt he was saying 'Hey Mama (he often called me 'mama' or 'Mommily') how bout this? Cool, huh? Like he had been playing around with ways to contact me. He was always kind of a techie person.

Did the deceased give you information you did not previously know?  Only that he knew how to get in touch with me through Linked In!

How do you currently view the reality of your experience?          Experience was probably real

Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not real:   This experience was in the context of quite a few unexplained occurrences that happened to me, Kyle's girlfriend, Kyle's sister, and even his Dad, who doesn't believe in ADCs at all. The more the synchronicities kept coming, the more I'm believing. They also led me to the work of Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona, and Mark Pitstick from Chillicothe, Ohio, who are doing studies on the survival of consciousness after death. Our church also did a seminar on NDEs - the ER nurse who spoke was convinced that after her 30 years in the ER, NDEs and ADC's are real. I am pretty convinced at this point.

Was the experience dream like in any way?  No

Describe in detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:  I think I was in sort of 'automatic pilot' mode - was just doing a daily task.

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience? Yes

That was a real pleasant shock. The fact that all the other contacts were 'shadows' for photos and his was the only one, and that it said 'from Mobile one wk ago' - I mean, that's pretty hard to explain.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?          Best part - I saw my son's picture and he sent me a message, sparse as it was. The worst part? It disappeared - he didn't answer me back:-(

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience? Yes                Describe:     I've been in touch with and have learned more about the afterlife, the research being done at the Univ. of Arizona and other places and it amazes me. I'm more curious, more serene about my son's passing, and feel better in general about death.

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?      Uncertain     Again, the experiences I had after my son died just enhanced my belief in the survival of consciousness after death.

Did the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death, afterlife, God, etc.?         Yes    That personal experience plus previous experiences (told to me by my mother after my father suddenly died in 1991) led me to research - I read about people on the other side using technology like phones, TVs, etc, (ie frequencies) to communicate just confirmed what I had thought was possible.

Death Compacts are when two or more living people promise among themselves that whoever dies first will try to contact the other(s).  Have you ever made such a compact?    No

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?          No

What emotions did you feel during the experience?          Almost euphoric.

Was the experience witnessed or experienced by others?          Yes

I was so gobsmacked I unhooked my computer and ran it down to the basement to show my husband.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time?  No

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?         No

Did you become aware of future events?      No

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience?      Uncertain

I don't know if this particular incident enhanced my openness to experiences - but it just probably made me more aware and open.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?   No

Did you meet or see any other beings other than the deceased?   No

Did you see a light?        No

Did any part of your experience seem to occur in a place other than the location described above?     No

Have you shared this experience with others?

Yes    Almost all were highly curious and wanted to know more. One said it was the work of the devil. My psychic, of course, said, well duh lol. I turned to her first right after my son's passing. She didn't know him at all, but almost immediately said 'his first comment when he passed over was 'The flower of life is really real'. I said 'Excuse me?' as I had no idea what that meant. But a couple months later, I noticed my son's business card which I had placed on my desk right after he died, but had never really looked at it. On his card, in the background was the flower of life, which I've since learned is a pattern in the area of sacred geometry. In speaking with Mark Pitstick who works with Dr. Schwartz, telling him all my experiences, he said 'Wow. Your son is one determined and energetic spirit!'

Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher or web site?         Yes

As I mentioned, I shared with Mark Pitstick of SoulPhone.org, who is doing research with Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona. Not sure If I shared on another web site - perhaps a grief group website?

Is there anything else you would like to add regarding your experience?   Just that I could tell another story about my cell phone, other synchronicities, etc. but my hands are getting tired:-)

Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?          No

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?       No

Did you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or other spiritual event? Uncertain

I had a precognitive dream re: 9/11 and one other less dramatic precognitive dream in my life. My mother also had 2 precognitive dreams. I didn't really have an out of body experience but awakened during open heart surgery - I was totally lucid, could hear people talking around me, but couldn't feel my body. I had the sensation of something above me that hurt like hell (most likely my heart) and thought what the hell is going on - thought I might be having a heart attack but then I heard laughter and thought 'Well, good, if I were having a heart attack I don't think anyone would be laughing.' Then I thought 'maybe I've had a stroke - but no, I wouldn't be thinking so lucidly if I'd had a stroke. What's going on? Damn, this hurts! Well, I'll just hang on - I have to for my sweet grandchildren...' The next think I remember they were extubating me. Weird. The anesthesiologist said all my vitals had been normal throughout the procedure. I think he thought I was nuts. My mother's friend, an anesthesiologist, told me these things happen more often than surgeons like to admit, bc they would have to wheel in an EEG machine as well as all the others and this doesn't happen all that often. So they don't want to bother with it. But from my standpoint, it's significant in that I can see how one's consciousness can exist without a body. Maybe I got a glimpse of what it's like to be in another form. Don't know.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?           Yes

Please offer any suggestions you may have to improve this questionnaire.       Some of the answers went from 'probably' to 'unlikely' without a category in-between like 'maybe'. There were a few other questions which were a little difficult to answer re:my experience, e.g. did it come on slowly and leave slowly. And 'did you see the person' - well, I saw his picture. Does that count? But I liked the way you gave room to explain/elaborate. Overall, a good survey:-)
