Experience description:

I met my second husband in 2002. We had an instant connection and stayed in love for the six years we had together, although life was made considerably more difficult because of his poor health. He was a Type 1 diabetic from the age of 13, and had had a lot of complications, such as renal failure etc.

He died suddenly, in his sleep in 2008.

I had several experiences afterwards, but I want to write about a particular one now.

In September 2009, I came home after a routine doctor's appointment. As I approached my door, I smelt a lovely perfume. I thought that my neighbors must have been using fabric conditioner on their washing, but no washing was hanging out, and I'd never known them to do this anyway. As I went into my house, the smell was stronger, and at the same level throughout the house. It was a beautiful, floral scent. It was the sort of perfume I'd choose if I was buying one (though I didn't buy perfume, or only rarely, and none of my bottles were open, had been knocked over, or were in any way the cause of this scent).

There was no source for this scent, and no rational explanation for it at all. It lingered for about half an hour, without reducing in aroma. After about half an hour, I had to leave the house to go to work, so I can't say how long the scent would have lingered if I'd stayed.

The next day I had my third appointment with a medium. (Contrary to my previous experience with mediums, I found this woman remarkable). The first thing she said was, 'He's been trying to send you some perfume'. I said that he'd been successful.

Was this experience difficult to express in words? No

Did you ONLY sense an awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling them? No

Did you hear the deceased or hear something associated with the deceased? Uncertain

Describe what you heard, how clearly you heard it and what was communicated: I didn't, but the medium did.

Did the voice or sound seem to originate externally or outside of you, inside you, or did you not hear a voice or sound, but had a sense of knowing what was communicated? A scent, definitely from outside of me. It surrounded me

If you heard a voice or sound, was it similar or dissimilar from the voice or sound the deceased made when they were alive? No voice

Is there any possibility what you heard was from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your experience? No

Was there any possible impairment to your hearing at the time of the experience? No

Did you feel a touch or experience any physical contact from the deceased? No

Did you see the deceased? No

Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased? Yes

What smell, scent, fragrance or odor did you smell? As explained above.

Was the smell, scent, fragrance or odor familiar? No.

Was anything communicated by the smell? Love, and a treat for me. He was always buying me flowers, and he used to call me, 'Flower'. (Very Leeds!)

Is there any possibility that the smell, scent, fragrance or odor was from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your experience? No

How long did the experience last? A half hour, but then I left for work.

Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden? Not sure

Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased? Yes

Happy, loving.

Did the deceased give you information you did not previously know? No

How do you currently view the reality of your experience? Experience was definitely real

Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not real: I was not expecting it. There was no rational explanation for it. It was backed up by the medium.

Was the experience dream like in any way? No

Describe in detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:
It had been 15 months since my husband died. I still grieved for him (I still do) but was living my life and primarily occupied with day to day events.

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience? Yes

I feel better.

What was the best and worst part of your experience? All good.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience? Yes Describe: Feel better.

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
Uncertain It made me see that such things are possible. Before, I'd felt that they are probably possible, but very rare.

Did the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death, afterlife, God, etc.? Uncertain I'm a natural skeptic and find it hard to incorporate supernatural experiences into my belief system. But there is so much evidence that I'm obliged to believe that these experiences are real, and there is help for the suffering in life, when physical life is over. For myself, other people and animals, I'm very glad about this.

Death Compacts are when two or more living people promise among themselves that whoever dies first will try to contact the other(s). Have you ever made such a compact? No

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later? Yes It was verified the next day by the medium, even though she had no way of knowing what I had experienced.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Puzzled at first, then increasingly hopeful that it was my husband.

Was the experience witnessed or experienced by others? Yes

The experience was in two parts. The second part was instigated by, and witnessed by, a medium.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time? No

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose? No

Did you become aware of future events? No

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience? No

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body? No

Did you meet or see any other beings other than the deceased? No

Did you see a light? No

Did any part of your experience seem to occur in a place other than the location described above? No

Have you shared this experience with others?

Yes I don't think they believed me. People will rush in to suggest a 'rational' explanation, even though I've just told them that I've discounted any. Presumably they think that being a grieving widow makes me credulous and irrational.

Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher or web site? No

Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience? No

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience? No

Did you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or other spiritual event? No

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience? Yes
