Experience description:

I was reading in bed while at my vacation house in California, and just got ready to turn out the light. When suddenly I got this really heavy over-all feeling, like a physical weight was pressing my whole body into the bed, and then I felt this incredibly wonderful over-all feeling (mentally) and I knew immediately it was my mom communicating with me.  I was so excited that I reached over and shook my husband and asked if he could feel it, but he said he couldn't.  He's well aware of my being sensitive, like my mother and aunt and sister and nephew, and my niece's son, who have all seen ghosts and even heard them speak.  I wasn't that lucky, but I was still excited to know my mom contacted me, and my sister said she experienced the same exact thing right after mom died. The experience left me feeling ecstatic, and I can still remember the feeling years later.  My mother told me she was visited by the ghost of her father and he told her that everything was alright, and the same happened to her sister who saw their mother.  I have seen ghosts twice, more recently, and within the same month, but never again since.  One was a man in my 90+ year old house in Monrovia CA (people have lots of sightings there), and another was a man who lived on the corner and I wasn't aware he had died.

Was this experience difficult to express in words?     No

Did you ONLY sense an awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling them?          No

Did you hear the deceased or hear something associated with the deceased?       No

Did you feel a touch or experience any physical contact from the deceased?       Yes

I experienced an all-over-the-body feeling of heaviness, like I was being weighed down.

Was the touch familiar or unfamiliar? unfamiliar

Was anything communicated by the touch? Just a feeling of incredible happiness, which seems incongruous with the over-all weighed-down feeling. I mean I was almost jumping with joy happy!  Seriously!

Is there any possibility what you felt was from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your experience? Cambria is dead silent at night, but I didn't hear anything anyway.

Did you see the deceased?       No

Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased? No

How long did the experience last?      About a full minute or a little more.

Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?      Sudden and unexpected.  There was nothing unusual about the night otherwise.

Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased?          No

Did the deceased give you information you did not previously know?          no

How do you currently view the reality of your experience?          Experience was definitely real

Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not real:   Given that my mother and aunt both saw ghosts of their deceased parents, and my sister has seen ghosts all her life (and others in the family have, including myself) and my own slight psychic ability, I have no reason to believe that what I felt (physically or mentally) was anything but real. You should hear realtor's stories!

Was the experience dream like in any way?  No

Describe in detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:  Happy!

Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience? Yes

The feeling of knowing that we have spirits that live on after death.  Comfort.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?     All good.  I just wish everyone could feel it.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience? No

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience? No      Did the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death, afterlife, God, etc.?   Yes          Confirmed my belief that our spiritual energy 'lives' on after death.

Death Compacts are when two or more living people promise among themselves that whoever dies first will try to contact the other(s).  Have you ever made such a compact?         Yes

I've told my son I will try to give him the same experience as my mom gave me.

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?         No

What emotions did you feel during the experience?          Happiness.  I couldn't stop smiling.  Took me a while to get to sleep.

Was the experience witnessed or experienced by others?          Yes

I woke my husband next to me to see if he could feel it too.  He couldn't.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time?  No

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?         No

Did you become aware of future events?      No

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience? Yes

I have seen actual apparitions twice since then.  One was a 'mischievous' man in our 94-year-old former house who liked to unscrew light bulbs and scare the cats (they actually hissed), and the other was a neighbor man who I didn't know had died.  Both were within a month and I haven't experienced anything since.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?  No

Did you meet or see any other beings other than the deceased?   No

Did you see a light?        No

Did any part of your experience seem to occur in a place other than the location described above?     No

Have you shared this experience with others?

Yes    Almost everyone I tell has had an experience to tell about.  I'm surprised at how many people have had some paranormal experience but have been afraid to talk about it.  My own sister never mentioned all her sightings until I told her about mine.  She said people would think she's nuts, and she had no idea about my mom and aunt's experiences.

Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher or web site?       Uncertain

I wrote some of this to some website years ago but I think it was an old site and not active.

Is there anything else you would like to add regarding your experience? Only that I was wide awake, and the 'lead-heavy' feeling of my body was real and sudden, and that the jump-for-joy happiness I felt was indescribable to the point of weird.  And I don't take drugs.  Ever.

Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?          No

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?    No

Did you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or other spiritual event?     Uncertain

I fainted from food poisoning and spent 8 days in the hospital.  When I fainted, I experienced being in a beautiful green field with flowers everywhere and sunshine, and I felt peacefully happy.  That also has made my slight fear of death a bit lessened.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?                     Yes
