Experience description:

My grandfather died when I was 16 years old; he was a beloved man and his death was hard on all of us. Time passed and the wound healed; we moved forward and learned to live life without him. The truth is that although I miss him like all my deceased relatives, at the time of the NDE, I had already gone through the stages of grief and I was fine.

However, one night when I was 18 years old, while I was sleeping, I had a dream that as of today recalls in many ways an NDE. I remember that I was in my grandfather's house and that it was exactly the same as we had left it. I was next to him, we talked and laughed, but shortly after, I looked at the door of the house and noticed that there was a blinding light in it. I looked at my grandfather and hugged him while we cried; shortly afterwards, everything lit up and I woke up. When I woke up, I realized that I did not remember at all what my grandfather and I had talked about during the dream. I am now 24 years old, and I remember that dream to this day with total precision, and the truth is that it has never felt like a dream.

Later, I did have dreams where deceased relatives of mine appeared; however, these did feel like dreams.  But the experience with my grandfather is etched in my mind and I recently learned about NDEs, so I want to share my experience so as to try to figure out if my dream falls within that classification, and to find out what exactly NDEs are.

What occurred during your experience included:   Content that was entirely not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. I believed that when we die everything turns off and it's over. I didn't believe in heaven or anything else. However, it is true that I grew up in a deeply Catholic environment.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience?   I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around that time. I barely remember other dreams; however, I remember this experience as vividly as when I had it.

Discuss any changes that might have occurred in your life after your experience:   I've tried to understand that experience, but I don't understand why it felt so different. I know that at that time, I was no longer mourning the death of my grandfather, and that puzzles me even more. The only thing I know is that it was beautiful, so when I think about the last time I saw my grandfather, I think about that experience and it makes me feel better.

My experience directly resulted in:   Slight changes in my life

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened:   Experience was probably real. It felt real, I felt conscious, it's not similar to my dreams at all.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience at the current time:   Experience was probably real. I do not want to venture to say that there is life after death; it is my belief but not a fact that one can prove to others. But it looked so real... I don't know how to feel.

Have your relationships changed specifically as a result of your experience?   Yes.
Now I try to find out more about my deceased relatives.

Have your religious beliefs/spiritual practices changed specifically as a result of your experience?   No

Did the questions asked and information that you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?   Yes

What could a national organization with an interest in near death experience (NDE) do that would be of interest to you? I just want people to know what NDEs are, and for them to be studied so as to fulfill the reality of the brain.

No
